Butterflies do not do well in cold weather. In fact, they can't fly if the temperature falls below 55 degrees and they certainly won't mate if it's cold.
In nice weather, Old World Swallowtail butterflies (pictured here) do a thing called "Hill-topping," at midday they frequent hilltops looking for suitable mates. No snark necessary; I know you just heard the clink of little glasses and grinding club music in your head.
